PUR binding: extra strong books and magazines

07.06.2024

Remember that unpleasant feeling when a book falls apart in your hands? Or when you need to tear a magazine a little because it won't open properly? Have you ever seen catalogs that have lost their appeal over time due to torn covers or damaged pages? Meet PUR Bonding Technology, which ensures your printed products will remain strong and maintain their appearance even after multiple viewings.

Spoiler

Polyurethane (PUR) Adhesive – This is a modern fastening method. Unlike traditional hot-melt bonding, polyurethane bonding has several clear advantages, including:

  • excellent durability;
  • flexibility;
  • < li>strength.

Technological process

In order for the sealed pages to turn into a magazine and catalogue, they need to be glued together. To do this, they are selected into blocks, and a special head applies a thin layer of glue to the end of the block.

This glue reacts with moisture in the air, which leads to quick and strong adhesion. After the adhesive is applied, the block of pages is flattened and compressed, then placed in a press to cure. After polymerization, PUR glue forms a very strong bond, which ensures the stability of the book or catalog for a long period of time. This bonding is much stronger and more durable compared to traditional hot-melt bonding.

Advantages

PUR adhesive provides exceptional strength and durability of the binding. Page pull test results show that books with PUR bonding are 50% stronger than books bound with conventional hotmelt adhesives. This strength ensures that PUR-bound books can withstand frequent use and maintain their structural integrity over time.

The polyurethane adhesive is also resistant to extreme temperatures. It does not soften or become brittle in heat or cold, so it is suitable for magazines and catalogs that are used in difficult conditions.

One of the biggest advantages for the reader is the ability to open a magazine or catalog in its entirety, at 180°. Such publications are easy to read and convenient to use. This feature is especially desirable for cookbooks, design portfolios and other publications where large, full-page illustrations are important.

Another important advantage is design flexibility. Exceptional adhesion strength allows the use of a wide range of papers, coated and uncoated, glossy and matte. Publishers and designers have the creative freedom to experiment with textures and finishes while maintaining the high quality binding that PUR offers.

Care for the environment

PUR fastening is not only guaranteed reliability, but also an environmentally friendly choice , which is consistent with sustainability principles and conscious practices. The bonding process with PUR adhesive is more environmentally friendly than other heat bonders, making it a better choice for publishers looking to minimize their environmental impact.

As such, Wolf Printing House uses this method as part of its commitment to providing high-quality printing while contributing to a green future.
