The most famous posters in the world

12.09.2023

The poster, one of the earliest forms of advertising, began to actively develop in the 19th century, with the development of printing technologies. Much has changed in their design since then, but as before, the most important feature remains the ability of posters to attract our attention in milliseconds. Some of the most famous posters in design history that have become works of art include everything from advertising to political propaganda. For inspiration, we have chosen, in our opinion, the most interesting old posters.

Le Chat Noir (1896)

Why the famous black cat posters have the same meaning as the Eiffel Tower in every souvenir shop in Paris?

Le Chat Noir ("The Black Cat") was a famous cabaret founded by Rodolphe Salis in 1881 in the Montmartre district of Paris. More precisely, Le Chat Noir actually refers to the cabaret, artist group and art magazine created by Salis.

The poster, created by the Swiss artist Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen in the 1890s, is an advertisement for artists who also performed outside of the Parisian cabaret scene and specialized in unique shadow theater performances inspired by Chinese shadow puppetry.

Le Chat Noir attracted poets, actors, singers, musicians and other artists, which over the course of about fifteen years helped make Montmartre the heart of Parisian artistic life. The advertising poster has become a symbol of the mysterious nightlife of Paris in the late 19th century and one of the most iconic advertising posters of all time.

I want you for U.S. Army (1917)

Uncle Sam's gaze is inevitable in the image, where his extended index finger conveys a clear message: "I want you to serve in the US Army." The 1917 poster reminded young men of their patriotic duty to fight for their country in the First World War. New Yorker James Montgomery Flagg is said to have modeled Uncle Sam on his own face. The poster was advertised during World War II and is still used today. The iconic ad is known all over the world.

Keep Calm and Carry On (1939)

The famous “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster was designed by the UK Ministry of Information several months before the beginning of World War II. His message was to boost morale and ensure that the public could bear the sacrifices and burdens required of them. However, the bright red and white poster was never officially approved for display. It was kept in reserve only in case of invasion of the country - after the war the entire series of posters was destroyed. But almost 60 years later, several remaining copies were accidentally discovered in one of the British bookstores. After the finder put them on display at a local store, the poster began to take off. The slogan has become quite popular among the millennial audience. Increasingly, the phrase "Keep Calm" became ubiquitous, on posters, online and even on merchandise.

Che Guevara (1960)

Photograph of revolutionary Che Guevara taken by Alberto Korda in 1960 , has become one of the most frequently reproduced images in the world. The image went viral as a symbol of anti-capitalism and peaceful social activists around the world.

The image was featured on posters, T-shirts, diapers, playing cards and just about everything you could imagine. Today, Che's image is over 50 years old and is still as popular and in demand as ever.

Campbell's Soup Can (1962)

Andy Warhol is an American poster art creator known for his colorful and instantly recognizable motifs. He was one of the first to take branding and imagery from popular, everyday culture and transform it into bold, confrontational works of art. And he proved that the worlds of design, advertising and art don't have to be so separate. One of Warhol's most famous motifs is Campbell's soup cans. The motif has given rise to countless variations and imitations. From T-shirts and tennis shoes to product labels.
