On November 17, 2010, a press conference “Preservation of wolves in Ukraine” was held in the Kiev city “House of Nature”. During the conference, speakers (in the photo from left to right):

Levina Galina, lawyer of the public organization "Ekopravo-Kyiv"
Svetlana Berzina, director of the communal enterprise "Animal Identification Center";
Pavel Dubrovin, development director of the Wolf Group of Companies;
Vladimir Boreyko, director of the Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center;

The Wild Footprint campaign began with the production of a wolf's footprint by the Wolf printing house. During the promotion, it could be bought at the Kiev Zoo for five hryvnia. The money collected will go towards taking measures to preserve the wolf population in Ukraine. During the event, children's competitions were held in the zoo area; One of the prizes was a book with a fairy tale about the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood in a modern style. In addition to the fairy tale for children about the good wolf, illustrated by Ekaterina Rudnitskaya, the book also contains information for adults on the state of attitudes towards wolves in Ukraine. The book was published by the Wolf printing house and can be obtained at the company's head office at Kiev, st. Syretskaya 28/2. Continuation of activities in this direction will be a children's drawing competition on the topic of wolf conservation.

As Vladimir Boreyko noted at a press conference: “Wolves are allowed to be killed all year round, without restrictions on numbers, in any place, including protected areas. Now the destruction of wolves is the official responsibility of hunting workers. Fines and administrative liability for poaching wolves in Ukraine simply do not exist. From 1946 to 1967, 35,000 wolves were killed in Ukraine, and from 1992 to 2007 - another 22,000.”

In addition, Svetlana Berzina noted: “Every year, wolves are officially destroyed in the country. there is a large number of wolf populations and there is a legal trade in wolf trophies. Thus, the Berne Convention and the CITES Convention, signed by Ukraine, are grossly violated."

"We have already sent our proposals from the Center to the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ukraine and the State Environmental Inspectorate regarding coordination of actions and combining efforts between public utilities and regulatory authorities in the field of protection and trade objects of the animal world to implement an effective control system in this area. I hope that the proposals will be considered positively and we will begin to work together. We already have a positive result of the Center’s cooperation with government agencies - the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in Kiev and the State Environmental Inspectorate, and public organizations, in particular the Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center to strengthen control in the field of the use of wild animals for commercial purposes. In recent years, in the city, such a phenomenon as photographing with monkeys, birds of prey and reptiles has practically disappeared,” noted the director of the Animal Identification Center.

The wolf plays a huge role in environmental processes, is a “forest orderly” and a symbol wildlife of Ukraine.

In Ukraine, the wolf is illegal. Violating the Berne Convention, wolves are destroyed in all possible ways and at any time of the year, without sparing small wolf cubs and pregnant she-wolves. The places of residence and migration of wolves are not protected in any way; there is not a single specialized reserve.

The wolf is an intelligent and beautiful creature. It plays a huge role in environmental processes. It is necessary to stop the destruction of these animals before it is too late! And each of us can do this.

Also, at the end of the conference, a field raid took place on the Kurenevsky market, where, accompanied by the district police inspector of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Obolonsky District in Kyiv - Alexander Dmitrenko, the participants of the event saw with their own eyes in the illegal trade in wolf skins.
